Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry dedicated to correcting teeth and jaw misalignments to enhance both function and appearance. By using advanced orthodontic treatments, such as braces and other appliances, orthodontists help straighten teeth, fix uneven bites, and create healthier, more confident smiles.

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for kids—adults can benefit too! However, some bite problems are more effectively treated during active growth periods. Parents concerned about crooked teeth or habits like thumb sucking should consider scheduling an orthodontic assessment for their pre-teens. Just as you establish a regular dentist for your child by age 7, it’s equally important to set up an ‘orthodontic home’ early. This helps your child feel at ease with their orthodontist and ensures a personalised treatment plan for a healthy, confident smile.

Orthodontists and dentists both play key roles in improving your oral health, but their areas of expertise differ significantly. Dentists address a wide range of oral health concerns, from cleanings to fillings, while orthodontists specialise in straightening teeth and correcting bite issues. After completing a general dentistry degree, orthodontists undergo an additional three years of specialised training to focus on diagnosing, treating, and preventing facial and dental irregularities. Choosing the right specialist ensures optimal care for your unique dental needs.

You don’t need a referral from your dentist to see an orthodontist at Orthodontix. Anyone can book an appointment with an orthodontist at any time to address concerns like crooked teeth, bite issues, or jaw alignment. For safe and effective results, orthodontic treatment should always be performed under the supervision of a qualified orthodontist. These specialists are trained to assess your dental needs and monitor your progress to ensure the best possible outcomes. Attempting unsupervised orthodontic treatment can be risky and may lead to serious issues such as damage to your teeth, gums, or jaw. Trust a trained professional to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile safely.

The duration of orthodontic treatment depends on the type of treatment and the specific tooth movements required. While some cases can be completed in as little as twelve months, most treatments typically take between eighteen months to two years. Your orthodontist will create a personalised plan to ensure the best results within the optimal timeframe.

The retention phase of orthodontic treatment can last indefinitely, with ongoing supervision from the Orthodontix team for up to two years. We’ll ensure your teeth remain in their ideal position and monitor your progress to maintain long-lasting results.

For best results we recommend you brush each morning, after meals and at night.

It’s important to brush thoroughly for at least three minutes and use fluoride toothpaste. A toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles is best and electric toothbrushes are highly recommended. Use a travel brush when you’re not at home. If you’re not able to brush after meals, rinse your mouth well with water.

We also recommend visiting your dentist for 6 monthly check ups.

Flossing takes more time with braces however, with a little effort you can keep gums healthy and help prevent decalcification. We’ll provide you with a special floss with a stiffened end to help thread the floss under the arch wire. It’s also available from most supermarkets and chemists.

1.Thread the floss under the arch wire. Pull the floss between the teeth and pull both loose ends against one tooth. Slide the floss back and forth and extend below the gumline. Remember you are cleaning the side of the tooth.
2. Slide the floss up to clear the gum and pull to the opposing tooth to floss the same way.

3. Before you pull the floss out completely, you can use the fluffy part to wrap around the bracket and easily remove plaque that brushing may have missed.

4. Repeat this procedure in between each tooth all the way to the back teeth.

Clear Ceramic Braces are a great option if you don’t like the look of traditional braces? To keep your Clear Ceramic Braces clean you should avoid foods with spices like tumeric and paprika  which are found in curries and other foods.

Get in touch with the Orthodontix team to arrange a time to have the bracket rebonded. If you are away or it is the weekend you can cover the bracket with wax/silicon or sugarless gum to hold it in place until your appointment with Orthodontix.

If your retainer wire has lifted or come loose you will need to make an appointment with Orthodontix to have it rebonded ASAP. Your retainer wire is in place to stop your teeth moving after your treatment.

It’s never too late to achieve a straighter smile! Braces can work effectively at any age, provided your teeth and gums are healthy. Schedule a consultation with us to assess your smile and create a personalised treatment plan that helps you achieve the confidence and results you deserve.

Invisalign® clear aligners are crafted from medical-grade, high-quality thermoplastic polymers designed for comfort and effectiveness. These discreet, nearly invisible aligners are made from materials chosen for their proven safety and durability, backed by a long history of FDA approval. Achieve a straighter smile with a treatment you can trust!

Orthodontic appliances are designed to align your teeth, enhance your bite function, and create a more attractive smile. There are several types of appliances to suit different needs and preferences, including:

  • Clear Aesthetic Braces: Subtle and less noticeable.
  • Invisible Aligners (Invisalign®): Removable and virtually invisible.
  • Traditional Metal Braces: Durable and effective for all orthodontic cases.

Without a comprehensive initial consultation, accurately estimating the total cost of braces can be challenging. This is because orthodontic treatment costs vary based on several factors, including the length and complexity of the treatment, as well as the type of braces or clear aligners you choose. Book a consultation with the Orthodontix team to help plan the cost of your treatment.
