Herbst Appliance Care

Herbst Appliance: An Effective Orthodontic Solution for Jaw Alignment

A Herbst appliance is a specialised orthodontic device designed to bring the lower jaw forward, effectively correcting malocclusion (commonly known as a “bad bite”). This appliance is often used as part of orthodontic treatment and can be worn either before getting braces or in conjunction with braces. Herbst appliances are particularly effective for children and teens who are still growing, making them an ideal solution for addressing jaw alignment issues during developmental years.

If you’re exploring options to improve your bite and achieve a confident smile, consult your orthodontist to see if a Herbst appliance is the right choice for you or your child! Book a Consultation With Orthodontix!

Caring for Your Herbst Orthodontic Appliance: Tips for Comfort and Maintenance

When you first get your orthodontic appliance, it’s normal to experience some discomfort. Here’s what to expect and how to care for your appliance to ensure optimal results.

What to Expect After Getting Your Appliance

  • Initial Discomfort: You may feel soreness or tenderness when biting for 3-5 days. Use over-the-counter pain relief as needed to ease the discomfort.
  • Irritated Lips and Cheeks: The appliance arms might irritate your lips and cheeks for 1-2 weeks as they adjust.
  • Adjusting to Talking: It may take a few days to get used to speaking with your new appliance.

Essential Care Instructions

  • Daily Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth twice a day to maintain oral health. Drink plenty of water to help flush any trapped food.
  • Orthodontic Appointments: Keep your scheduled appointments so the orthodontix team can check your appliance is not missing any glue or screws have become loose
  • Prevent Appliance Issues: Avoid opening your mouth too wide or yawning excessively, as this may dislodge the appliance arms. Placing putting excess or unusual pressure on the rods to prevent breakages. If this happens, contact Orthodontix immediately for assistance.
  • Expander Care: If your appliance includes an expander, follow the key-turning instructions carefully. Tie the key with floss to prevent accidental swallowing.

What to do if Something Breaks?

  • Keep all the broken pieces
  • Contact Orthodontix ASAP to arrange an appointment with your orthodontist.

Foods to Avoid

To protect your appliance and teeth, steer clear of the following:

  • Hard foods: Popcorn, nuts, ice cubes, and hard lollies.
  • Sticky foods: Caramel, sugary gum, beef jerky, jujubes, and licorice.
  • Meat: Cut into small manageable pieces
  • Non-food items: Chewing on pencils or fingernails.
  • Hard fruits/vegetables: Cut apples, carrots, and similar foods into small, manageable pieces before eating.

Sore Mouth Rinse

If your appliance causes sores in your mouth, use a simple saltwater rinse:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of salt in a small glass of lukewarm water.
  • Rinse your mouth for 1 minute to soothe irritation.

By following these guidelines, you’ll ensure your orthodontic appliance works effectively while keeping your teeth and gums healthy. For any concerns or emergencies, contact Orthodontix—we’re here to help!
